Kataragama is the most holy place of pilgrimage in the south of Sri Lanka. The name Katargama comes from the God worshiped here. Here, four different ethnic and religious groups – Sinhalese Buddhists, Tamil Hindus, Muslim Moors and indigenous Weddas come together at this spiritual site. Especially recommended for tourists is the pilgrim festival and its main rituals, such as offerings and penances. Kataragama is also used as a starting point for safaris to the nearby Leopard National Park Yala.
